[fusion_text]If you are feeling overwhelmed or out of control these days, it’s time to take the reigns and get your cart back on a more peaceful path.

It’s so easy to feel like you are spiralling and ultimately not good enough at what you do when there are so many things on your to-do list that even reading it gives you heart palpitations.  You feel like you need more than 24 hours in a day and three extra pairs of hands to accomplish what you need. There’s no time to get sick or look after sick loved ones.  There’s no time to do anything just for you (like take a bath, or read a trashy novel) because you constantly feel guilty for not working.  I know … I’ve been there.  Even now, as an entrepreneur where my time is technically my own, it’s easy to get caught up in “everything” that should be done.

So what’s my remedy?  Commit to a system or routine that works for you.

Start with your To-Do list

  1. Write down EVERYTHING you know that needs to be done. Getting it out of your head and on to paper clears some of the clutter in your brain.
  2. I don’t care how long it is, select 3 things that must be done first (they can not all be #1) and make them today’s priority.  Don’t worry, the rest of your list is safe wherever you wrote it down.

Set an Intention for Today

Decide how you want your day to look and feel like and set an intention for that to be true.

Schedule your Time for Today

  1. Personal first – appointments, health regimen etc
  2. Business second – 20% planning, 80% action. I know it’s obvious, but taking action will move you closer to your goals.  Sometimes we get so lost in the chaos, no real action is being taken.
  3. Don’t forget to schedule in some FUN!

Focus, Focus, Focus

  1. Commit to being fully present in each activity. Place your phone on airplane mode and turn off your email to avoid interruptions.
  2. Stick to the time you allotted for each activity … avoid allowing a 1 hour task run on for 3 hours! Imposing a deadline can awaken the creative juices.
  3. If you are doing something that is focused on self-care, allow yourself to be fully there and not distracted by the greater to-do list running through your mind.

STOP Working

  1. When you’ve completed the items on your to-do list, it’s time to STOP WORKING. If you finished up early, take that as a sign that “tomorrow” you can take on a little more.
  2. FEEL what it’s like to have a little extra time and reward yourself by doing something spontaneous with that time.

A Grateful Review of today

  1. Take a moment at the end of your day to review and acknowledge all that you DID accomplish today.
  2. Know that whatever is left over will be on your list tomorrow. It’s not going anywhere and the sky will not fall in.
  3. Be grateful for the progress you have made towards your goals.

The key is to start small and experience the wins, one day at a time.  Get use to the routine of planning your day.  Understand what is reasonable and unreasonable to expect in a day.  It IS REASONABLE to expect …

  • Time to breathe and relax
  • Time to spend with your loved ones
  • Time for fun
  • Time to meet your business deadlines
  • Time for yourself
  • Time to do nothing

If life is feeling chaotic for you, ask yourself a couple of questions …

If I am only allowed to focus on 3 things, what would my priorities be?

Am I willing to schedule them into my day and follow through?

Am I willing to focus on one thing at a time for a day?

Am I willing to STOP when I’ve accomplished my 3 things?

Am I willing to live a chaos-free day?

  1. This is such good advise. My BEST days are the days that I do this (especially the list of To Do’s!) And finishing the day with gratitude makes you focus on the positives rather that what you didn’t do or didn’t do well! thanks Tracy!

    1. Totally agree with you Pat … when I start the day without a plan it quickly becomes chaotic and then I wonder where the day went! I’m trying out some new meditations to start my day with as well.

  2. Greetings, I believe your website could possibly be having web browser compatibility problems. When I take a look at your web site in Safari, it looks fine however, if opening in IE, it’s got some overlapping issues. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Besides that, wonderful website!
